What is your spark?
Wednesday, August 31, 2022 | Syracuse, UT
Illumination is a free community event that focuses on what we can do daily to support our mental health and wellbeing. One way is to find and nurture our “spark” – that thing that gives our life meaning and purpose. What is your “spark”?
About Illumination
Our mission is to foster a safe and connected community for our youth by empowering our families, schools, and local leaders. Illumination is a free community event promoting mental health and wellbeing in our youth. It is a collaborative effort with support from Safe Harbor Crisis Center, North Davis Communities that Care Coalition, North Davis Communities that Care Youth Coalition, NUHOPE Suicide Prevention Task Force, government officials in our community, and other community members and organizations who want to make a difference.
Illumination is an event that focuses on what we can do daily to support our mental health and wellbeing. One way is to find and nurture our “spark” – that thing that gives our life meaning and purpose. Research has shown that when young people can identify their sparks and have the support of caring adults in pursuing their sparks, they have higher grades and better attendance in school, are more likely to be socially competent, volunteer to help other people, have a sense of purpose, and are less likely to experience depressive symptoms.
This will be the third consecutive year for Illumination. The event will be held on Wednesday August 31, 2022, and host several workshops, a keynote speaker, and as with past years, the event will close with a nighttime Illumination fireworks display. The event will again be held at Founders Park in Syracuse, Utah.

Smith’s Story
“I draw my motivation to spread light from my many years spent in the dark. In my early elementary years I was bullied for my size and my speech impediment. This led me to believe that I wasn’t enough. After being exposed to pornography and getting several different social media platforms, I slowly became a victim of addiction and self-hate.
I drove myself far away from everyone that I love and found myself dealing with anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts. My parents found out about everything that was happening and it created a pivot point in my life. On this day, April 23, 2018, my mom grabbed my face and said “Smith, I will fight for you but you have to fight for yourself first.” So I did.
I now spend my time traveling and speaking to schools and youth groups about the harmful effects of social media and pornography and inspire them to live a life beyond their screens. I give parents the resources that they need to parent with confidence in a digital era. This mission of mine is needed and it will never end.”
